MANILA, Philippines — Wilma Salas is happy to return to the Philippines with a different shade of red as part of the PLDT High Speed Hitters in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Champions League.
Salas, a former Petro Gazz Angel, delivered 10 points to lead her new team PLDT past the Queensland Pirates of Australia, 25-19, 25-12, 25-12, on Sunday at Philsports Arena.

“I’m so happy for my comeback here in the Philippines. This time, I play for PLDT. I feel so happy because I feel like it’s a family with this team. Incredible girls, super coach. Nothing more to say about this because I feel like I’m home here,” said Salas.
The Cuban import relished her reunion with her former Petro Gazz coaches Rald Ricafort and Arnold Laniog, who have been with the High Speed Hitters for the past two years.
“I finished my season in Italy. Coach, PLDT called me and [asked] ‘Wilma, okay, are you free, are you ready?’ [I said], ‘I’m ready, I go to you, I go to Philippines.’ It’s an easy decision,” said Salas. “I talked [to Petro Gazz] but I made my decision and I came here.”

The 34-year-old outside spiker said it wasn’t hard adjusting to the High Speed Hitters’ culture as she’s been familiar with Philippine volleyball since she played for Petro Gazz in 2019 with its maiden PVL title and last year.
“The difference is like, nothing. It’s only about the coach, different coach, different approach, go more. The coach is a good person, the girls are good persons. I think it’s like the same. Nothing much of a difference, really,” she said.
