MANILA, Philippines — Not wanting to experience the same pain that Petro Gazz felt two years ago, MJ Phillips did everything to make sure the Angels ended up with a different ending this time.
In the 2025 PVL All-Filipino Conference Finals, Phillips and Angels were reminded of their previous Finals showdown in the same conference 2023, where they won Game 1 but failed to close out the best-of-three series.

But thanks to the efforts of Phillips, among others, in the deciding Finals game 3, Petro Gazz finally clinched the much-coveted championship.
“I just didn’t want to lose that bad and I just kept looking at my teammates and just the eye contact and knowing that everyone has my back. That’s why they gave me the strength to be able to do what I do. It’s all for my teammates. [I’m] happy,” said Phillips, who averaged 15.33 points in three games to be adjudged the Finals MVP.

Phillips dropped 15 points including four blocks as Petro Gazz won its first-ever All-Filipino Conference title, ending Creamline’s dynasty with a 25-21, 25-16, 23-25, 25-19 win in front of over 10,000 fans on Saturday night at the packed Philsports Arena.
Phillips was a picture of consistency, scoring 16 points in Game 1 and dropping 15 points in a five-set loss in Game 2 two days ago.
“I just think that we learned from the past, and we came together. Even when times were tough, our backs against the wall, we all made sure to stay together and be patient because our time was going to come. Thankfully, it did. I’m just so proud of my team,” she said.
Phillips and Angels have a quick break to relish their latest champion before they represent the Philippines in the upcoming AVC Champions League from April 20 to 27.
