Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd wonders if it is time for Melbourne to part ways with coach Simon Goodwin at the end of the year, suggesting it might be time for a fresh start.
Goodwin has been at the helm since taking over from Paul Roos as part of a succession plan in 2017.
The Dees have clearly been on the decline since winning the 2021 premiership, finishing 14th in 2024 and sitting 15th currently in 2025.

Given the quality still present on their list, Lloyd believes Melbourne might simply need a fresh voice running the show.

“Simon Goodwin is contracted until the end of next year, but I would consider moving on Simon Goodwin at the end of the year,” Lloyd told Nine’s Footy Classified.
“For the reason that they need fresh ideas, and I respect Simon, he’s brought a lot of success to Melbourne, but do they need a fresh set of eyes overseeing the program?
“There’s stars out there, but the same problems keep happening at Melbourne. They miss shots, poor inside 50 entries, the lack of connection.
“They’ve had patches that have looked OK, but we’re still hearing the same things over the weekend and seeing the same problems.

“I just think that’s the time it is at Melbourne (time for change), the on-field stuff at Melbourne, to me, it’s a broken record.
“Do they go another year and just put faith in (Goodwin) that it’s suddenly going to turn around? All the players are out there. They’ve got generational type players and they’re finishing bottom four.”
Melbourne enters its bye week with the chance to re-evaluate where things sit, ahead of a tough round 16 clash with Gold Coast in Queensland.
