MANILA, Philippines—On the night the PBA celebrated its 50th anniversary, San Miguel Beer zoomed past Meralco in a special matchup at historic Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Make no mistake about it, though, the Beermen didn’t just defeat the Bolts convincingly, 110-98, they also did it in style, rocking the famous jerseys of old that brought undeniable nostalgia on Wednesday.
“It was very nostalgic because I only see these before on YouTube,” said San Miguel star June Mar Fajardo after notching a double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds.

“I’ve been saying it before, I was hoping we get some retro jerseys and now it happened. Hopefully, we get more retro nights because there are lots of great jerseys from the past.”
San Miguel Beer paid homage to its heritage with its 1982 threads while Meralco also donned retro jerseys, taking it back to 1971 when the ball club won the MICAA Open crown.
While Fajardo absolutely loved the throwback kits, he hoping to wear even more of those old threads, particularly the one from 1987.

“I want the green one! I don’t know exactly the year they used it but it was green [if I remember correctly],” said the eight-time league MVP.
The Beermen will go back to wearing their regular jerseys on Wednesday when they take on fellow unbeaten team Magnolia Hotshots at Araneta Coliseum.
